Ipanema enables itself to achieve its ambitions…
|
 |
|
Ipanema is actively pursuing its objectives: new product functionalities, new partnership offers using the Ipanema system, new international locations…
In order to be successful with these strategies, it has become necessary to do a complete rebranding. We invite you to take a look at our new website, our new visual identity and our new tagline:
Beyond the Network…
In this issue of Ipanews, Jérôme Marquet, Head of Value Added Services at Orange Business Services, reveals their new Acceleration offering called Network Boost. Based on Ipanema’s latest technology, it completes the Business Application Management (BAM) managed service, bringing internationalization and new functionality.
We also talk about Ipanema’s new innovative and practical function: smart|path which enables you to access multiple VPNs as a single logical network. You can simultaneously ensure application performance, availability and optimize your telecom costs easily.
Do not hesitate to contact us and attend our webinars and shows.
Kind regards,
Béatrice

Orange Business Services launches its new ‘Network Boost’ offer using Ipanema’s solutions |
 |
Béatrice Durand for Ipanews: Please can you tell us about Orange Business Services?
Jérôme Marquet: Orange Business Services has 29,000 employees in 166 countries, and reaches all enterprise markets: SME’s, international accounts and multinationals. We reach our clients in 220 countries and territories via a network of 1,400 PoPs located in 890 cities and towns. With over 300,000 sites on our IP VPN network, we manage the largest global MPLS network. This has allowed us to become a privileged partner for both the WAN optimization and acceleration markets.
BD: What is Orange Business Services’ approach with regard to application traffic management and acceleration?
JM: IP convergence, growth and the level of criticality of exchanges leads to IT consolidation. The development of new critical web applications as well as recreational applications requires management processes that are adapted to the WAN: managing bandwidth per application, reducing response time and controlling bandwidth increments. The answer to this high demand comes from different players on the market. On the one hand, software publishers are working to improve application behavior over the network and on the other, suppliers offer new application performance management equipment. On our side, we offer a managed service to our customers that enables them to focus on their core business. In the managed services market there are differing levels of maturity and most of the recent solutions are based on technologies with both maintenance and monitoring. To go even further in the Quality of Service delivered to our customers, Orange Business Services is committed to application performance. Nowadays SLAs are a key component for all managed services and are complimented by additional services such as acceleration range, which can offer a global service optimization on the latest generation WANs.
BD: Can you tell us about your new offer, ‘Network Boost’?
JM: Network Boost is an evolution of the current Business Appli-cations Management (BAM) offering. It’s an international application performance management and acceleration offering. Network Boost ensures that critical applications always receive the best level of performance on the network by leveraging technological choices and the support of our teams of experts.
- Identification of applications on the network
- Definition of objectives (criticality, performance) for each and dynamic optimization of traffic
- Assist the decision-making process through reporting by providing visibility information on the traffic volume and application performance
- Application acceleration to improve the response time, depending on the criticality level as well as application QoS
- Application SLAs that indicate the level reached in relation to the objectives set.

Virtual Private Networks (VPN): Smart Path Selection or how to combine the advantages of MPLS and Internet
|
 |
|
Béatrice Durand for Ipanews: When do enterprises use redundant network infrastructures?
Thierry Grenot: Enterprises use the network to deliver their business applications to their employees who are spread across the world. It is therefore crucial to guarantee the maximum availibility of the network, which almost always leads to the duplication of data centre access and means that one needs to plan for a second access for agencies and remote sites.
BD: How are the two accesses used?
TG: The mode that is most use is called ‘Hot Standby’. It allows for a rapid and automatic changeover from the primary access to the failsafe access relief, which is not normally used when everything is working well (i.e. most of the time).
BD: Why is this a problem?
TG: In many situations, the secondary access is the ‘internet’ for example. Its characteristics are: high bandwidth, a relatively low price and no service level guarantees. It’s normal that enterprises look to benefit from this access which they pay for anyway (flat-rate monthly billing). This is also true when there are dual accesses like MPLS, or even dual Internet accesses.
BD: What solutions currently exist?
TG: The most common is called ‘Policy Based Routing’ (PBR). This basically indicates to the router which access to use depending on which application is being used: MPLS for ERP, Citrix, Voice… and the internet for applications which are not too sensitive (email, Web). This solution is inconvenient for two reasons: it’s too complex to deploy, its largely suboptimal; in fact why not use the internet for SAP if the network performance allows it? Why not choose MPLS for emails when there are no critical flows?
BD: What is the added value that Ipanema’s Smart Path Selection (smart|path) offers?
TG: smart|path addresses all the drawbacks noted above. Each flow is access orientated and provides the best performance and maximizes the compliance with application SLAs. It also takes the performance of the different networks (end-to-end) into account as well as taking snapshots of the performance of different technical characteristics of each application. It seamlessly integrates with Ipanema’s ‘Autonomic Networking’ architecture and is fully automated.
The traffic is therefore balanced in order to obtain both maximum performance and full availability at the same time.
