ITIL

If you are adopting the ITIL approach… You need Ipanema!

Information systems are vital to your business. Your organization has decided to implement the ITIL methodology to improve the delivery of IT services in your organization.

You have had meetings with the IT team, where the fundamental principles of the new approach have been outlined:

  •   Customer centric
  •   Service level management
  •   Financial management
  •   Capacity management
  •   Continuity management
  •   Incident management
  •   Supplier management
  •   Configuration management, etc.

You are told that availability, performance and costs need to be agreed, measured and managed. These all seem like nice concepts and buzzwords but how realistic are they when it comes to managing the WAN?

The network is probably one of the hardest parts of the business infrastructure; it’s where most components come together (yours or your operator’s), where most modifications occur (short and long term, application architecture consolidation, and the continuous evolution of the underlying technology…) and where there is little or no information connecting usage with means.

It is therefore no surprise that it’s one of the most expensive and yet unclear areas of IT and often becomes the perfect scapegoat!

To be able to implement the ITIL approach you would ideally need:

  •   Factual, real-time information about application performance over the network
  •   Common language to discuss it with your end-users, i.e. what constitutes good performance?
  •   The ability to link performance to cost
  •   A tool that allows you to minimize incidents and brownouts and easily manage change

The Ipanema Solution provides you with all of the above functions. By using the Ipanema Solution in collaboration with application managers you can rank the criticality (importance) of applications and define the service levels you want to obtain. The System will then use its optimization function to guarantee the performance of the critical applications and alert you in real-time if the service levels of the less-critical applications are not achieved. Furthermore, by using its Rightsizing module, you can easily find out how much bandwidth is required for a given level of service, clearly linking application performance to cost.

It will also allow you to charge back end-users based on required and delivered performance. It will allow you to setup a surveillance of the different components of the application delivery chain, including for example the MPLS VPN service provided by your Telco.

Finally, it will seamlessly manage change by automatically adapting to evolving network conditions such as nomad end-users, new application roll-outs and so on while still meeting desired application performance objectives.

Fréderic Muller, Dalkia’s Network Manager, said: “With Ipanema, we now have simple tools that allow us to support new IT management processes. From now on we can negotiate, define, analyze and guarantee IT performance over the network.”

The Ipanema Solution is the ideal networking tool to easily implement all of the ITIL requirements!
